Stair and railing coordination in BIM catches conflicts that are expensive to resolve in the field. For a REVIT handrail or guardrail run adjacent to stairs, the three primary coordination points are the stair stringer, the slab edge or landing structure, and any glazing system at the same level or below.
Check stringer clearance first. Most stainless steel post anchor systems require space between the anchor centerline and the stringer face. If the stringer sits close to the stair edge, confirm there is enough material depth for the anchor without reducing the structural section. Pass the railing post layout to the structural engineer early, not during the submittal review phase.
For runs that terminate at or intersect glass wall or curtain wall systems, coordinate the base shoe or post location against the curtain wall grid. Glass infill panels and curtain wall mullion spacing are independent systems that can conflict at corners and returns. Run a clash detection pass specifically on railing-to-glazing intersections before issuing for coordination. P+P Artec’s project gallery shows how these conditions are resolved across a wide range of commercial installations.
Floor penetrations for post anchors require structural input on post-tensioned or composite slabs. Anchor locations must clear tendons and shear studs, and the coordination window before concrete placement is narrow. Share the railing post layout with the structural engineer during DD, not at the submittal stage.
